Egypt’s world No. 2 Karim Abdel Gawad (r) and world No. 3 Mohamed Elshorbagy both make their Oracle NetSuite Open debut.
The 2017 Oracle NetSuite Open player entry list and seeding has been revealed as San Francisco prepares to host the strongest field to date on the all-glass Oracle NetSuite Challenge Court at Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero, September 24-30.
For the first time in the tournament’s eighth year, the top four ranked men’s players in the world enter the $100,000, sixteen-player draw as the top four seeds. Egypt’s reining world champion and world No. 2, Karim Abdel Gawad, and world No. 3, Mohamed Elshorbagy—both former world No. 1’s—are both set to make their Oracle NetSuite Open debut.
Competing in his sixth consecutive Oracle NetSuite Open, France’s world No. 1 Gregory Gaultier is set to defend his 2016 title as the top seed with sights set on a record fourth title. Two English former world No. 1’s and Oracle NetSuite finalists return, world No. 4 Nick Mathew and world No. 6 James Willstrop, as the respective four and five seeds.
For the first time, the $50,000 women’s draw will feature eight of the world’s top twenty players. Three of the top four seeds represent England as 2016 champion and world No. 4 Laura Massaro leads the draw as the top seed. In the final, Massaro is predicted to face Malaysia’s eight-time world champion and former world No. 1 Nicol David, who enters her second Oracle NetSuite Open draw as the two seed.
After reaching the inaugural women’s final in 2015, England’s Sarah-Jane Perry returns to San Francisco for a second time with her highest career world ranking of seven as the three seed. Compatriot and world No. 13 Emily Whitlock enters the draw as the four seed in what will be her tournament debut.
“The Oracle NetSuite Open has been one of the premier tournaments on the PSA World Tour calendar for the last five years and we are delighted to welcome the world’s best players back to San Francisco in what looks set to be one of the most exciting and competitive editions of the tournament,” said Tournament Promoter John Nimick.
“The popularity of squash continues to grow in California and we are sure that squash fans in attendance at the all-glass Oracle NetSuite Challenge court will be captivated by a world-class field next month.”
